2025: “Museum. Learning. Democracy”. By Hadwig Kraeutler.
Hadwig Kraeutler, a colleague and long-standing member of the CECA, organiser of the CECA’s
international conferences in Vienna in 1996 and 2007, and CECA regional coordinator for Europe, has just published this masterful work on one of our committee’s first members, Alma S. Wittlin. In 386 pages and more than 60 pages of appendices, a bibliography and a list of Alma S. Wittlin’s writings, the author has succeeded in summarising in five richly documented chapters the fascinating life of this writer, museologist, museum mediator, journalist and art historian of Austrian origin, born in Ukraine, who emigrated to England to study for her doctorate at Cambridge and then to the United States.
Her numerous writings on museums and education, including The Museum: Its History and its Tasks in Education, published in 1949 and expanded in 1970, her analysis of the phenomenon of “museum fatigue”, her rich biographies (Isabella of Spain and Sultan Abdul Hamid), on peace and war, emigration, the importance of cultural exchanges and international networks, led Hadwig Kraeutler to organise, with great energy and perseverance, the Alma Wittlin Memorial Lectures at the ICOM General Conferences in tribute to this “intrepid humanist”, concerned with the environment and the intellectual and emotional development essential to a democratic world. A book to be read in small doses, but rich in reflections on many subjects that resonate in these uncertain times we are living in.

Research for CULT Committee – Education in Cultural Heritage
Abstract
After a résumé of basic definitions this work aims at recommending to the CULT committee how, in order to contribute to sustainable development, cultural heritage and education should be integrated into an inclusive, horizontal and lifelong learning approach. It is highly recommended having cultural heritage at the very core of education and not as a stopgap and seeing education more deeply rooted in cultural heritage through adequate and efficient mutual long-term partnership policies.
