Identity, credibility, sustainability”.

The Conference will take place on the 12th and 13th of December 2023, at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece. This will be the culmination of a series of events that are taking place throughout 2023 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ICOM Hellenic National Committee.

The Conference will reflect on fundamental museum functions and the role of museums in addressing and resolving contemporary issues. It will also explore new challenges and prospects in terms of identity, credibility and sustainability faced by the European museums in the post-pandemic world. In line with ICOM’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028 principles, the Conference topics will hopefully open a fruitful discussion that will help envision the future of European museums.

ICOM CECA 2023 Conference for Latin America and  Carebbean

The Pachacamac Museum in Lima, Peru, will host the XIII Regional Meeting of CECA LAC 2023, to be held from October 25 to 28.

This year, the theme “Museums and sustainable development” will bring together members of the Committee on Education and Cultural Action for Latin America and the Caribbean together with professionals linked to museum work, museum and cultural center workers, educators and university students, on aspects related to museum education and cultural work, in order to generate spaces for dialogue on the importance of articulating the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and therefore incorporate sustainable development strategies in museums in the region.

More than 100 papers received. There will be guest lectures, round tables of experiences, research and workshops, where we will have the opportunity to reflect on actions related to museum education in our communities, as well as to promote good socio-educational practices to ensure sustainable projects and the welfare of those who are part of them.

Both for CECA LAC, coordinated by Silvana Lovay, and for Museo Pachacamac, under the direction of Denise Pozzi-Escot, the active participation of the museological community of Latin America and the Caribbean is extremely important, in order to generate new links and strengthen collaborative work networks, in pursuit of collective construction on common issues of analysis and resolution.
For this reason, many of the CECA LAC members will travel to other regions of Peru once the Meeting is over, to explore successful experiences on the impact of actions created from museums with the communities of those localities, and also to give workshops on different topics, such as the CECA LAC Coordinator, Silvana Lovay, the CECA Colombia Correspondent, María Mónica Fuentes Leal and Paola Araiza Bolaños, CECA Mexico Correspondent, among others.

The Guests are:
Alan Trampe, President of the Intergovernmental Council of the Ibermuseos Program.
Mila Chiovatto, Coordinator of the Educational Action Nucleus of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
Mario Chagas, Director of the Museum of the Republic of Rio de Janeiro.
Cecilia Genel Velasco from Mexico and representative of Ibermuseos; who will offer the central workshop on sustainability.
Fernanda Castro, President of the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM) and Marielle Costa, IBRAM official.
The Special Interest Group on Museum Education and Decoloniality, presenting their work on the “dECOloniales” Podcast.
This event will be an opportunity to learn, share and establish networks around museums and sustainable development; a meeting organized from Latin America and the Caribbean with a collaborative and decolonial perspective.

Various tributes will also be paid to those who forged the path of museums in Peru, as well as to Latin American women who are a reference in the region for their work.
And at the end, a Manifesto will be presented with the voices of educators, exposing the realities of education in museums in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is a document that is being prepared for the first time at the request of the Coordinator of CECA LAC, and that will lay the foundations for future meetings, as well as the online publication of the works presented.

This meeting will be possible thanks to the efforts of the Direction of the Pachacamac Museum and the Coordination of CECA LAC; and thanks to the institutional and financial support of Ibermuseos, the Brazilian Institute of Museums -IBRAM-, the Ministry of Culture of Peru, ICOM Peru, LATAM Airlines, Cálidda (Peru) and the support of the Association of Artisan Women SISAN; and several museological institutions that will join with different events and events in the city of Lima.

Participation is free of charge.
